Updates to Health Protection Act

Please note the updates to the Health Protection Act [PDF] recently made by the Chief Medical Officer of Health.

Small Business Reopening and Support Grant and Reopening Nova Scotia

The Premier announced on May 27 that most businesses required to close as part of the Public Health Act will be able to reopen on June 5. The province has released a plan on how to operate in the time of COVID-19.

The Premier also announced a $25 million Small Business Reopening and Support Grant. This provides funding for small businesses, non-profits, charities and social enterprises that were ordered to close or greatly reduce operations because of the Public Health Order or were greatly impacted by orders to stay home.

Also available is a $1500 voucher to support those ordered closed to access consulting services. More information is available online and applications will begin June 1.

Gathering Limit Increased from 5 to 10 persons

It was announced on May 29 that the maximum number permitted to participate in social gatherings, arts and culture events, sport training, and faith ceremonies has increased from 5 to 10 people. Participants must adhere to the physical distancing protocol of staying 2m apart. More information re gathering restrictions is available here.

It was also announced on May 29 that sleepover summer camps are cancelled for the remainder of 2020, and that pool maintenance work can begin in preparation for reopening, likely in time for summer.

Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy Consultation

The Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) was recently extended to August 29, 2020. The Department of Finance Canada is seeking information and feedback from businesses of all sizes, labour representatives, not-for-profits and charities on potential changes to the CEWS, with a view to maximize employment in Canada and encourage growth.

The CEWS Consultation opened May 25 and is scheduled to close on June 5. More information including a link to the survey is available here.
