Learning Programs

Our evidence-driven Learning Programs have been designed and curated to effectively and sustainably build the capacity of your organizations staff, leadership and board to meet the challenges and opportunities inherent in running a progressive small to medium sized nonprofit organization in Nova Scotia.

Educate & Innovate

Provide the tools, skills and knowledge to increase the capacity of existing and newly forming small- and medium-size nonprofit and voluntary organizations province-wide and ensure they build a flexible and diverse workforce that will thrive in today’s innovative digital economy.

Our courses in Organizational Core Competencies are a direct response to key areas of interest as expressed by the sector and can help you to build the pillars of a responsive, agile and healthy learning organization. Our online learning and corresponding digital resources are an innovative response to the shifting realities in the training landscape, and the emerging need for grounded and well-informed capacity building training for remote learners. Our Flagship Programs, including our ED Networks and Leadership Labs, provide an open space for less formal learning, knowledge networking and shared knowledge creation alongside current leaders and emerging leaders in the sector.

Organizational Core Competencies Workshop Series

The Community Sector Council offers a workshop series on Nonprofit Organizational Core Competencies including the following three full day workshops:

Board Governance

Board Governance

The Board Governance Workshop seeks to teach boards the key elements of Good Governance. Good governance is an essential part of any organization's effectiveness and success. Regular evaluations and reviews of your board and its practices, as well as regular board education and updates, will ensure your board and organization is operating in compliance with best practice and effective stewardship of the assets of your organization. This is key to being productive, strategic, ethical and sustainable.

This program has been designed to assist in building your board into a highly functional, well-informed, supportive and service oriented body, capable of playing a core role in guiding your organization toward its strategic goals by leveraging current best practice alongside the skills, experience and knowledge that your board members already possess.

Strategic planning

Strategic Planning

The Strategic Planning Workshop seeks to teach boards the key elements of Strategic Planning. Building your organizations’ capacity to manage effective Strategic Planning can be a crucial element in adapting to sectoral and organizational change, and proactively organize your work in a purposeful way.

This hands-on workshop will provide a grounded overview of the Strategic Planning process, and provide some practical guidance on thinking through the various stages, from understanding the broader nonprofit strategic context, comprehending your own situational context (SWOT, SOAR, etc.), setting achievable priorities, and building efficient and broadly agreeable action and operational plans within your organization.

Financial Sustainability

Financial Sustainability

The first half of the session will introduce organizational financial sustainability and fiscal health by looking at four core elements: Sound Financial Practices, Fund Development, Strategic Thinking and Fostering Innovation. In the afternoon, we'll examine grant identification and proposal writing in a practical exercise.

Strategic Communications & Social Media

Strategic Communications and Social Media

The Strategic Communications and Social Media workshop will explore best practice regarding the development and application of grounded, well-informed and strategically aligned organizational communications planning. We’ll examine the potential strategic roles, activities and obligations for dedicated communications and program staff in modern nonprofits, and how these key activities are informed and shaped by your strategic and operational plans, sector-wide trends, and best practice emerging from the related fields of social media, web technologies and information and knowledge management. We’ll work collaboratively to create a strategic communications plan that aims to leverage your existing strategic plans, makes the best use of your teams’ reporting and communications strengths, a plan that can help identify areas for development and capacity building, and that can help you build an effective and well-considered web presence.

Nonprofit Leadership & HR

Nonprofit Leadership and HR

Modern nonprofits in Nova Scotia face a significant set of challenges recruiting and retaining skilled and experienced staff and leadership at all tiers of their organizations. During this session, we’ll discuss the various sectoral leadership and HR contexts that have given rise to these challenges, and explore ways to address, prepare and deliver on more sustainable HR practices, building the space for staff to grow and develop into a strategically aligned and collaborative team.

This workshop will introduce a set of tools, practices and approaches to building and maintaining a staff team in the nonprofit and charitable sectors in NS. We’ll work together in this session to build an HR plan that will allow your leadership and board to better mobilize a staff team in the pursuit of the organizations’ mission and vision and strategic programs.
